Model of care

Known midwife (MGP/birth ctr in pub. hosp.)

Why did you choose this model of care?

It was the only one offered to me (thankfully)

What were your choices for this birth?

Water immersion for labour and birth, Support for normal vaginal birth, Unmedicalised birth process

How did your birth start?

Spontaneous labour (started naturally)

What were your outcomes?

Staff I didn't know attending me, Water immersion for labour, Epidural, Caesarean section, Breastfeeding difficulties, Obstetric violence (eg denied care, forced into decisions, touched without consent, yelled at)

Did you feel you could say No to care/treatments offered (or change your mind about your choices) at any time?

No

Details of experience

Unfortunately my known midwife was not available when I went into labour at my hospital. Had she been there, I know I could have birthed my baby as she would have advocated for me and empowered me. Instead (once fully dilated) I was given a time frame to push my baby out and when my baby wasn’t showing signs of coming, scared into a caesarean. My baby had no signs of distress but the fear scared me into surgery and left me feeling a failure.
