Model of care

Midwifery clinic (pub. hosp.)

Why did you choose this model of care?

What were your choices for this birth?

Water immersion for labour and birth, Support for normal vaginal birth, Unmedicalised birth process, Birth support team of my choice (no visitor restrictions), Access to medical care/surgery if nec (eg c-section)

How did your birth start?

Spontaneous labour (started naturally)

What were your outcomes?

Staff I didn't know attending me, CTG monitoring (continuous monitoring of baby's heartbeat), Induction/augmentation of labour, Caesarean section, Breastfeeding difficulties, Ongoing health challenges for me/baby, Obstetric violence (eg denied care, forced into decisions, touched without consent, yelled at)

Details of experience

This hospital has a lending library of all the best books to prepare for positive birth experience. Unfortunately, none of the staff I encountered seemed to have had any training in supporting my needs. Decisions were made without consulting me. I was not presented with any choices, or the risks or benefits of the cascade of interventions that I experienced. At 9.5cm, I was invited to be part of a scientific study to assess the effectiveness of an intervention. My partner refused, and they did it anyway. I can't talk about the next bit, except that it had the quality of a violent sexual assault, and left me in a dissociative state.
Afterwards, I lay naked in blood-soaked sheets for a few days. I was yelled at for not completing my food preferences form. I was continuously asked where my 'Green Book' was (but it hadn't been issued and I didn't know what they were talking about). I was discharged unable to breastfeed and with no feeding plan in place. After discharge, my calls to the hospital for help were forwarded to the ward but never answered.
I can't tell you all of the things that happened. My eventual complaints letter was 11 pages. In one of my birth debrief sessions, I made the VERY senior director tear-up and postpone the rest of our session.
DO NOT attend this hospital on a public holiday long weekend.
