Model of care

Private midwife

Why did you choose this model of care?

Traumatic previous birth, poor care in public hospital previously, I wanted continuity of care with a known midwife.

What were your choices for this birth?

Water immersion for labour and birth, Support for normal vaginal birth, Homebirth with a registered private midwife, Unmedicalised birth process, Birth support team of my choice (no visitor restrictions)

How did your birth start?

Spontaneous labour (started naturally)

What were your outcomes?

Transferred from home/low risk birth service to hospital due to diagnosed risk, Attended by my known midwife/doctor, Birth support team of my choice, Water immersion for labour, Water immersion for birth, Instinctive pushing (ie not coached)

Details of experience

Birthing with a private midwife was an expensive option but I considered this an investment in my own health and wellbeing, and thus an investment in the care for my baby. In the home environment, I was less likely to be interfered with in ways that would detract from my birth experience.
