Model of care

Private midwife

Why did you choose this model of care?

I wanted to be supported during my pregnancy and birth to have a little intervention as possible and respected for our choices i.e. to decline vaccines.

What were your choices for this birth?

Water immersion for labour and birth, Support for normal vaginal birth, Homebirth with a registered private midwife, Unmedicalised birth process, Birth support team of my choice (no visitor restrictions), Access to medical care/surgery if nec (eg c-section)

How did your birth start?

Spontaneous labour (started naturally)

What were your outcomes?

Transferred from home/low risk birth service to hospital due to diagnosed risk, Staff I didn't know attending me, Prevented from having birth support team of my choice, CTG monitoring (continuous monitoring of baby's heartbeat), Instrumental delivery (Vacuum extraction/Forceps), Grazing/1st-2nd degree tear, Vaginal birth, Special care nursery/NICU stay for baby, Breastfeeding difficulties, Ongoing health challenges for me/baby

Details of experience

The biggest realisation I've had post birth is that choosing the right care provider who is attuned to each woman is so important. My private midwife was the best option available at the time, but upon reflection I never found her to be reliable; therefore, I didn't feel safe or have 100% trust in her. This lack of connection between the two of us impacted my labour and led to delayed delivery, risk of infection, IV antibiotics after hospital transfer (5 nights in special care nursery) and most importantly, I left my birth feeling incompetent and not capable of being a mother. I went into my labour feeling empowered, ready, excited and on the other side felt destroyed.
